We left for Kenya a few days early so that we could acclimatize as much as possible to both the time zone change (10 hours ahead of Vancouver) and the altitude we are to encounter on our ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro (sea level in Vancouver to 19,340' to the top of Kili). Our first two days have been right on our acclimatization plan. Once landing in Nairobi, we took a small charter plane to Laikipia Nanyuki Airfield, about 30 minutes away by air, Unfortunately the road systems in Kenya apparently aren't the best and driving would have been 3-4 hours from Nairobi about 200 kms away. We definitely aren't travelling light, not only are we planning to be on Mount Kilimanjaro for 7-8 days where we need clothing for expected temperatures at our start of greater than 20 deg C then around minus 15 at the top, but after the ascent we will be on a safari for 15 days. All of this is right beside the Mount Kenya National Park and World Heritage Site that has over 3,000 game wardens protecting the wildlife in the area. Unfortunately we did not see too many animals on this hike as the Masai have been allowed by the government to bring their cattle and goats here to survive the terrible drought that has gone on in Kenya this year. Their many herds have driven the native wildlife deeper into the bush, but at the first rain the Masai must leave for their homelands 100 km away and all will return to normal in the wildlife sanctuary. The Animal Orphanage is absolutely amazing. We hope that we are able to send some pictures to show you the wide variety of animals they support. These animals are all destined to re-enter the wild at some time. The orphanage takes in orphaned wild animals and also has a captive breeding programme for a number of endangered species such as the Mountain Bongo hoping to stabilize the species in the wild. Our 20 km walk was very informative, and at 7000' altitude it will hopefully help us with our transition to the high altitudes (19,340') of Mount Kilimanjaro.
